Main things to know about Microgynon 30
Important information needed before taking Microgynon 30
Microgynon 30 is a combined oral contraceptive pill containing the two active ingredients levonorgestrel and ethinylestradiol. It is taken to prevent pregnancy and so can only be taken by women.
How does Microgynon prevent pregnancy?
- The contraceptive pill prevents your body from ovulating. It also:
- thickens the mucus in the womb, so it is harder for sperm to penetrate the womb and reach an egg
- thins the lining of the womb, to make it harder for a fertilised egg to attach to the womb and develop.
Health care advice for those taking Microgynon 30
If you’ve never been on hormonal contraceptives before, you should talk to your GP who will decide if it is safe to prescribe it to you, and who will discuss with you which contraceptive pill is more appropriate.
The contraceptive pill should not be prescribed to women who are pregnant, obese, smoke and are 35 or older, or have a history of thrombosis or breast cancer.
What are the recommended Microgynon 30 dosages
Each blister contains 21 tablets. Each tablet contains 150 mcg levonorgestrel and 30 mcg ethinylestradiol.
Take one tablet a day at about the same time for 21 consecutive days, by following the order shown on the blister. After a blister, no tablet is to be taken for 7 days. During this tablet free break, you will have a withdrawal bleed, similar to regular periods, but often lighter and less painful. After the 7 days break, start a new blister.
What are the side effects when taking Microgynon 30?
All medicines can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Common minor side effects include feeling sick, stomach ache, weight gain, headaches, mood swings, sore or painful breasts.
If you’re on Microgynon 30 and you experience too many side effects, talk to your GP, who will be able to recommend another contraceptive pill.
Some side effects are very serious, and can include signs of a blood clot (tightness in the chest, migraines…), signs of breast or cervical cancer (lumps, abnormal vaginal discharge…) If you experience any of those, you should consult your regular prescribing doctor immediately. Please see the Patient Information Leaflet for the complete list of side effects.
