Question: I'm on nrt for aweek past history says i can last weeks without cigs but fail. Chemist says champix is best for me should I start smoking again and wait for champix to kick in?

Answer: It is important to not combine NRT-treatments with Champix since these two treatment approaches cancel each other out - NRT contains nicotine and aims to gradually wean you off the cigarettes by slowly reducing the dose of nicotine you'd normally obtain from smoking cigarettes. Champix on the other hand is nicotine-free and acts on the nicotine receptors in the brain. If you wish to take Champix, you therefore need to stop NRT first. You may find that this leads to you starting to smoke again if you do not manage to stay quit after an abrupt nicotine withdrawal. Usually smokers start taking Champix and then set a quit date. Your pharmacist will be able to advise you on the dosaging regime and answer any further questions you may have.
