News story: Obesity during pregnancy puts unborn child at risk of weight problems

Analysis: Staying healthy throughout pregnancy and ensuring your weight remains within a normal range is vital for keeping yourself in shape, but is hugely important for the health of your unborn baby. A study examining the links between weight in pregnant women and the risk of obesity in children during their school years has highlighted that obese expectant mothers put their children at risk of weight problems.

Extra Information

According to recent scientific discoveries, certain factors that pave the way for child obesity may begin whilst the unborn child is still in the womb. The consequences are a tendency to be overweight and reach a stage of obesity by the age of seven. The health risks of obesity include serious metabolic problems, with diabetes in the number one spot followed by a series of other correlated pathologies, such as high cholesterol and high triglycerides which with time eventually lead to hypertension.

Pregnant women who should pay particular close attention to the risk of passing on weight issues to their babies are those who were slim before pregnancy. Mothers who gain weight rapidly during the nine month period are unknowingly passing on the possibility of developing serious obesity issues to their child. The reasons behind this phenomenon have yet to be understood, however, are expected to be the focus of further medical studies.
